BBC ‘Call The Midwife’ episode 4

Last night’s episode of Call The Midwife was noticeably darker than previous episodes. This week, a young woman, 27 weeks pregnant with her first child, died tragically of toxaemia. Midwife Cynthia was allowed to follow the case through to the end and was heartbroken when she learned that the couple had only known each other for a year, and had been married only 6 months. It was extremely poignant when Cynthia had to tell the husband that his wife was dying and that all they could do was to make her final hours as comfortable as possible. The poor man was distraught and Cynthia was left to ponder the cruelty of love and decided one should seize the moment, as you never know how long you will have with a loved one. I wonder if a love interest will be introduced for Cynthia at some point in this series or the next one. I hope so, she is such a sweet, kind character.

The second depressing story this week was when the newborn child of a young couple was stolen from her pram. The whole community pulled together to search for the child, but the mother withdrew into her shell, unable to cope with the loss of her baby. In a surprising turn of events, Jenny discovered that the baby had been taken by the prostitute, Mary, whom Jenny helped in episode 2. Mary’s own baby, Kathleen, was taken from her for adoption, and Mary was traumatised. This would explain why, still desperate for her own child, she stole another woman’s baby. Thankfully, Jenny managed to persuade Mary to give her the baby, in a scene that was emotionally charged and excellently acted by Jessica Raine as Jenny. The baby was returned to her parents and poor Mary was arrested. The nuns convinced the baby’s mother to speak on behalf of Mary to prevent a prison sentence, as she was clearly a ‘disturbed, ill young woman’.

We did get some light relief in this episode too. Chummy returned beaming from her first date of “fish and chips and High Society” with PC Noakes. He invited her to accompany him to a local dance, and the other midwives decided to come too. Jenny invited Jimmy, who was all too happy to attend. PC Noakes and Chummy had a great time together and their relationship appears to be getting more serious. Do I hear wedding bells in the future? I sincerely hope so!

Once again, this was a brilliant episode and once again, I eagerly anticipate the next one…
